HMS Belfast is a light cruiser which was launched in 1938. HMS Belfast shows you how it was to work and live on a warship which served in the Second World War and the Korean War and remained in active until 1963. Explore all nine decks of this amazing seafaring history where sailors once went to battle on. Built by Messrs Harland & Wolff of Belfast in 1936, Anne Chamberlain, wife of the then Prime Minister launched Belfast on St Patrick’s Day 1938. Best known for her role during the Second World War in supporting the Allied troops on D-Day.

From the Captain’s Bridge to the sailor’s mess deck, operations room and engine rooms, visitors will hear her battle stories and experience what life was like for her 950 crew. You can also find out what it was like to live as part of a ship’s community, eating, sleeping and socialising together in cramped messdecks. Down in the bowels of the ship, imagine what it was like to work among the noise and ferocity of the inner workings of the ship. In January 2009 a new exhibition, Launch! Shipbuilding Through the Ages opened. It focuses on the science, engineering and social history of shipbuilding in Britain.
